The Region
La Forge sits by Montolieu, a village over a thousand years old where history and culture mingle in an extraordinary way. Montolieu is a unique village in that, it has now been hosting the “Montolieu Village du Livre et des Arts Graphiques” association for the last 20 years, which is a vessel for the development of “graphic art” workshops, a Conservatory for the Arts and Fabrication of books, and a exceptional number of old and refurbished bookshops. To top it off, Montolieu is also home to a contemporary art center and regularly hosts jazz and classical concerts.
If one decides to fully discover the city of Carcassonne, one can easily immerse oneself in the history of it, so fascinating is the Cathares period and all the remaining traces of it sourrounding the region.
Whether through the beautiful walkways and places, the sumptuous gardens, or even the ZACs and other decidedly French examples of modern urbanization, Carcassonne offers plenty of charms that cover over a millennium of history, each century leaving its noticeable mark.
Benefiting from its location on the outskirts of the Mediterranean region, the climate allows for a rich fauna, including cacti, palm trees, olive trees and lavender. A surprising contrast in climate and landscape can be noticed just a few kilometers away, where the southern slopes of the Montagne Noire offer a cooling combination of lakes and rivers.
Just south of Montolieu, one can enjoy the Canal du Midi, by simply walking along its enchanting banks or by renting a boat for a leisurely cruise. The Mediterranean, the Pyrenees, and Spain are also all in proximity of this exceptionally versatile location.
The TGV and TER trains provide services to Carcassonne, and if one is flying, a number of possibilities are available : Carcassonne airport offers flights to Great Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands, and Toulouse airport offers flights outside the E.U. as well as frequent charter flights to Paris and other French cities.
